A map made up of hexagon tiles. 7 green islands contain tiles for water, food, and crafting materials. Tiles with letters from A-G connect islands together. A sea of gray tiles fills up the space between islands.

Systems Design Tabletop Game Design

A short project I made with 3 other classmates for a systems design course at UCSC. We were limited to 100 hex tiles for the game board, and a maximum of 24 tokens for any other game-objects. I focused on leading ideation and brainstorming, establishing core mechanical concepts and gameloops, conducting playtests, and writing the rules document.

Our iteration over the 2 week sprint focused on establishing a strong core gameloop, while addressing emergent dynamics we felt slowed or inhibited the scrappy, cutthroat gameplay we were looking for. The final product is simple but cohesive, and would work well as a proof-of-concept, either a larger game with beefier systems, or to be turned into a paper prototype.
